Air Conditioner Remote Display Works but the Unit Won't Respond
A working remote screen does not prove the air conditioner is receiving commands. Start with these simple checks before ordering a replacement.

A working display is only part of the picture
If your air conditioner remote display works but the unit won't respond, start with the batteries and signal path. The screen can operate even when the remote is not successfully sending a command. The indoor unit may also have a setting, power or receiver issue.
Avoid repeatedly pressing buttons at random. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which check makes a difference.
Fit fresh batteries first
Replace the batteries with the type specified in the remote's manual. Fit a complete fresh set in the correct orientation rather than mixing old and new batteries. Check for loose contacts or visible corrosion. If batteries have leaked, stop using the remote until it has been assessed or cleaned according to the manufacturer's guidance.
A bright display is not a reliable battery test. Fresh batteries are a useful first step even if the screen looks normal.
Check the signal path
Stand near the indoor unit and point the remote towards its receiver. Remove objects blocking the path, and check that the remote's transmitting window is clean.
For an infrared remote, a phone camera can sometimes show the transmitter flashing when a button is pressed. However, some cameras filter infrared light. A missing flash is not conclusive, and a visible flash does not prove the remote is sending the correct code.
Check settings and allow the unit to respond
Look for a lock symbol, timer or unexpected operating mode. Follow the model's manual to change those settings; there is no universal unlock combination.
After switching modes or restoring power, allow the delay specified by the manufacturer. Repeatedly switching the system off and on can make diagnosis harder. If the unit has an accessible manual-operation button, use it only as described in the manual. Do not remove electrical covers.
If the remote was recently replaced
Compare the indoor unit's model number with the replacement remote's compatibility information. Similar-looking buttons are not proof of compatibility. A universal remote may also need its code programmed before use.
If the unit responds to its approved manual control but not the remote, the remote, programming or receiver needs further investigation. If it will not operate at all, contact a qualified air-conditioning technician rather than assuming another remote will fix it.
Frequently asked questions
Does a working display mean the remote is working?
No. It confirms the display has power, not that the correct command reached the air conditioner.
Should I reset the remote?
Only follow the reset procedure for your model. For related checks, read how to reset your AC remote after a power surge.
Before shopping for a replacement at Office Catch, have the indoor unit model and old remote number ready. They are more useful than a photograph of the buttons alone.
